General
R2-R9 first appeared in the film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, which was released on May 19, 1999.The droid was not named in the film, but first received identification in the Star Wars: Episode I Insider's Guide[1] released on June 23, 1999.[2] The name was then first confirmed to be canon in the "Rise Against the Empire" expansion of the video game Disney Infinity 3.0, which was released on August 30, 2015. Despite the game's non-canon status, Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo confirmed on Twitter that the names it uses for film characters are considered canon.[3]
