History of the Astromech line of droids as told by http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/R-series/
The R-series originally began with the P2-series astromech droid, which was sold exclusively to the Republic merchant fleet.
BB Series
The BB-series, also known as the BB unit, was a model of astromech droid active during the era of the Cold war, featuring a spherical body that allowed the droid to roll in any direction, with a head usually atop the body but not meant to be permanently physically attached to it (which would inhibit the droid's ability to roll around).
C Series
The C-series was a line of astromech droid employed as mechanics or co-pilots on starships of all sizes. By the time of the Galactic Empire's reign, they were outdated by most standards. One model within the line was the C1-series astromech droid.
P2 Series
The P2-series astromech droid was Industrial Automaton's first astromech droid prototype for the R-series, using a rounded body design that would later prove popular with the R2-series astromech droids.
R Series
R1 Series
The original R1 unit was designed from the body shell of the earlier Mark II reactor drone and was generally seen as an improvement of the P2 in its early years. The R1 was much less bulky than the P2, although still large, and able to hold 500 starship configurations. It was the first of the series to hold hyperspace navigational capabilities.
R2 Series
The R2 Series then far surpassed the R1. It was smaller, able to fit into a standard starfighter, and had more capabilites than its previous model. It was extremely popular with pilots and was often used by the Galactic Republic. It could hold 700 configurations and featured full-spectrum, electromagnetic, heat, motion, and life-form sensors. The R2 unit was built for all environments, and came with an array of tools, which could include electric zappers, fuel-squirting compartments, pincers, lights, holoprojectors and computer arms able to access any computer. R2-D2 is the most notable one of its class.
R3 Series
The R3 unit was based on the R2's basic design, and was only distinguished visually by its clear dome. Unlike the R2, this unit was built for military and government uses, and could hold an immense amount of data.
R4 Series
The R4 unit was designed for antigrav vehicles, and was more suitable to the public than its predecessor. Several of the R2's advantages were removed to lower the price, and make it more available.
R5 Series
The R5 Series followed the R4 in many ways, including its inexpensive build. It was prone to malfunction and an unpleasant personality, so production ended quickly.
R6 Series
The R6 Series was released after the Battle of Endor by Industrial Automaton to cover the huge failure of the R5 unit. Its programming was similar to that of the R2 unit, although it had a shell similar to that of the R5. The R6 boasted more storage than the R2, and was equipped with extra tools.
R7 Series
The R7 model was designed specially for the E-wing escort starfighter, and did not show the same performance with other ships. Its systems were even more advanced than those of the R6 and R2 models.
R8 Series
The R8 model was designed similarly to the R7, but with a satellite dish instead of a sensor "eye." It was built to accommodate a larger array of starfighters, instead of focusing on a particular ship, such as the E-wing.
R9 Series
The R9 model was similar to the R2, but with enhanced systems
R0 Series
The R0 droids were the last series of astromechs built by Industrial Automation before giving way to the new BB series of droids.
