After the [[Battle of Yavin/Legends|destruction]] of the [[DS-1 Orbital Battle Station/Legends|first Death Star]] by the [[Alliance to Restore the Republic/Legends|Rebel Alliance]], the Empire commissioned the construction of a [[Death Star II/Legends|second Death Star]].<ref name="figure" /> By [[4 ABY/Legends|4 ABY]], construction of the [[battlestation]] had begun over the [[Endor/Legends|forest moon of Endor]].<ref name="ROTJ" /> R5-J2 was one of the [[Droid/Legends|droids]] assigned to the [[Space station/Legends|station]];<ref name="figure" /> he was present in one of the Death Star's [[Hangar/Legends|hangar]] bays when the [[Sith Lord/Legends|Sith Lord]] [[Anakin Skywalker/Legends|Darth Vader]] arrived to order the [[Tiaan Jerjerrod/Legends|station's commander]] to speed up construction on the [[Superweapon/Legends|superweapon]], and was also present among the other droids when [[Galactic Emperor/Legends|Emperor]] [[Palpatine/Legends|Palpatine's]] [[Emperor Palpatine's shuttle/Legends|shuttle]] arrived at the Death Star's [[Hangar 272]] shortly afterward.<ref name="ROTJ" />

In 4 ABY, the Rebel Alliance gained knowledge of the second Death Star's existence. Additionally, they learned that [[Emperor]] Palpatine was personally overseeing the superweapon's final stages of construction. Determined to destroy the Death Star and [[Death/Legends|kill]] the Emperor in one act, the Alliance launched an [[Battle of Endor/Legends|assault]] on the incomplete battlestation. The Alliance ultimately proved victorious and the Death Star was obliterated.<ref name="ROTJ" /> R5-J2 perished in the resulting explosion.<ref name="figure" />

R5-J2 appeared in [[1983]]'s [[Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi|''Star Wars'': Episode VI ''Return of the Jedi'']] as an unidentified droid extra, barely visible in the Death Star's hangar bay at the beginning of the film. The droid would go without a proper designation until [[2006]]'s ''[[Star Wars: The Saga Collection|The Saga Collection]]'' line, which included an [http://www.rebelscum.com/tsc058r5j2.asp action figure] of the droid that provided the designation R5-J2.
