The [[R2-series astromech droid]] designated R2-R9 served the [[Royal House of Naboo/Legends|Royal House]] of the [[planet/Legends|planet]] [[Naboo/Legends|Naboo]] during the reign of [[Queen/Legends|Queen]] [[Padmé Amidala/Legends|Padmé Amidala]].<ref name="TPM">[[Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace|''Star Wars'' Episode I: ''The Phantom Menace'']]</ref> In the [[Standard year/Legends|year]] [[32 BBY/Legends|32 BBY]], Naboo was [[Invasion of Naboo/Legends|invaded]] by the [[Trade Federation/Legends|Trade Federation]] and the planet's [[Capital/Legends|capital]] [[Theed/Legends|Theed]] was captured. With the aid of the [[Jedi]] [[Qui-Gon Jinn/Legends|Qui-Gon Jinn]] and [[Obi-Wan Kenobi/Legends|Obi-Wan Kenobi]], Amidala and some of her staff managed to escape from the Federation and board the [[J-type 327 Nubian starship|J-type 327 Nubian]] [[J-type 327 Nubian royal starship|Royal Starship]] in one of the hangars of the [[Theed Royal Palace/Legends|Theed Royal Palace]]. As the starship left Naboo's [[atmosphere/Legends|atmosphere]], Kenobi brought the [[Gungan/Legends|Gungan]] [[Jar Jar Binks/Legends|Jar Jar Binks]] down to the room in the starship where R2-R9 and the other astromechs were docked and told him to wait there. A shot from one of the [[freighter/Legends|freighters]] damaged the Royal Starship's [[Deflector shield generator/Legends|shield generator]] which set off an alarm in the room the astromechs were waiting in. R2-R9 and the other [[droid]]s immediately left their docking stations and rolled over to a lift that would take them to ship's exterior. R2-R9 was second onto the surface after<ref name="TPM" /> [[G8-R3/Legends|G8-R3]]<ref name="Insider's Guide" /> and the droids quickly set about attempting repairs.<ref name="TPM" />

As [[R2-D2/Legends|R2-D2]]—the last droid to reach the ship's exterior—reached the damaged generator, R2-R9 was struck by a shot from one of the Trade Federation vessels and [[Death/Legends|destroyed]]. Each of the other droids were then picked off one by one until only R2-D2 remained; however, he was able to complete the repairs to the generator and save the ship, which successfully escaped the blockade.<ref name="TPM" />

==Characteristics==
R2-R9 was an [[R-series]]<ref name="30 Ann Coll" /> astromech droid with [[Color|red]] and silver paneling.<ref name="TPM" /> Like all R2 units it was manufactured by [[Industrial Automaton]] and stood 0.96 [[meter]]s tall. Like other members of its model make, it demonstrated great bravery in the face of danger, as evidenced by its last moments being to risk exposing itself to turbolaser blasts to fix the ship.<ref name="30 Ann Coll" />
